Description
Ok, last one for the night, but expect some happier ones of Polish castles, salt mines, and Czech architecture sometime tomorrow!
One of 65 chairs in a metro station in Krakow, Poland, dedicated to the 65,000 Polish Jews who suffered and died during the Nazi regime.
When Germany conquered Poland, all Jews were ordered to relocate into a one of five major ghettos Poland. Multiple families would be crammed into one level of a house or apartment building. One of the things they hated most were the walls; they despised the walls of ghetto because they were shaped exactly like Jewish tombstones.
I hope I'm not wrong or arrogant for finding that a little ironic. :l
Anyway, the reason the artist chose chairs for the monument is because after the ghetto was liquidated in March 1943, that's all that was really left: only chairs.
